MARSH MARIGOLD

The Marsh Marigold has now taken over many lawns, including mine, with lovely large clusters of flowers.  They are especially fond of the banks of streams and can be found now in abundance on the stream running through Merion Park.

FORSYTHIA 2011

Trying to catch the wild beauty of the forsythia is one of my favorite spring pleasures.  My neighbor's large collection is a favorite place to start, and in this case end, looking for the best subject.  Several of my favorite places were hacked to pieces this year unfortunately.  Check out last year's selection here.  Check out some pure color prints using forsythia colors as their theme here.

BATHROOM REDS

A little touch of spring in the bathroom.
This painting was done on very flat and slippery board so it had to be painted twice and stippled.  I like the way the stippling unites the edges but I am going back to canvas board in the next painting, still using the stippling.

DOG DIGNITY

A foggy day, the autumn joy at its richest hue and Bay, my shy dog, finally taking his place in the picture as if to say, "This is where I belong".

ARBOR

Every year in September this arbor blooms.  One of the joys of living in the same place for a long time is that you look forward to the recurring gifts of nature and enjoy the echoes from the past that each succesive blooming evoke.

FIRST DANCE RECITAL

How does it feel to take your first delicate steps as a ballerina in public? Last week I was on vacation at the sea shore, but before I went I had the delightful experience of seeing my beautiful grandaughter, Emma, in her first ballet recital.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

Here is a quiet spot on Harbor Road in Prince Edward Island, Canada.  I've been off on a virtual trip again as part of the virtual paintout.  From what I could see if you want to do nothing but look at the sky and drive down some empty roads, this is the place to do it.  Check it out yourself by clicking on the tittle and when you get to the map, drag  the little yellow guy in the upper left hand corner around to view the scenery and cruise the island to your heart's content.

BEE BALM

My garden has been completely taken over by these bizarre beauties.  They are not only very hardy, the foliage smells like a musky mint when crushed and it can be made into a medicinal tea.  For more info click on MONARDA.

DOWNTOWN

In Philadelphia last week to see ORPHEE at the Kimmel Center.  The sky is really the subject here.  It was a surprisingly calm and lovely night.  Click the link for three reviews in the Broad Street Review.  For you culture vultures I highly recommend this on line art centered news blog.

WAYNE GARDEN

Another painting from the 'Garden Series' at the Wayne Art Center.  This is located in a section of Wayne I didn't know existed.  There are lots of large old interesting homes with big yards.  Looks like they are from the early 20th Century.

LONELY HOUSE

Here is a building in West Philadelphia that must have an interesting history.  It looks like a row house that lost it's row.  What happened to the rest of the block and how was this house spared?  It looks like the clouds are holding it in place here.  What does it feel like to live here? In spite of it's isolated position it has a cheery countenance and trimmed hedges, a fresh coat of paint and a neat, fenced in yard.

SIMPLE OLD HOUSE

This is the simple house that goes with the simple barn in the last post.  These old, well maintained buildings, date from the 1700's.  That's a long time to survive in all their pristine beauty.
These are more paintings from the Lower Merion Conservancy paint-out.  See photos of some the artists who participated and the gala that followed plus Bill's beautiful painting on Bill Ternay's blog POSTCARDS FROM PHILLY. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit the Conservancy.

SIMPLE OLD BARN

                                              SIMPLE OLD BARN
                                                  Nancy Herman
                                                        6" x 8"

To be in nature, when it is tamed and safe, is probably one of the most soothing experiences.  This stately old barn from the 1700's adds to the serenity with its simple lines.
A portion of the proceeds of this painting will be donated to the Lower Merion Conservancy.

ALLIUM

The Allium in my garden are so reliably sprightly.  I look forward to their appearance every year.

WHITE DAFFODIL

There are so many kinds of daffodils and they are so easy to grow I sometimes forget how really lovely they are.

NARBERTH BRIDGE

Since I cross this bridge 4 times a week on my way from ballet class, I thought it deserved a place in my blog.  The old church seen on the other side is undergoing a change and will soon have a new identity.

MERION FRIENDS MEETING

One of the most serene and lovely places in Merion and the surrounding area is the Merion Friends Meeting House.  It is located on a very busy street and yet once you walk up the lane you are back to 1695 when it was originally constructed. http://merionfriends.org/
