Two Dogs in the Morning Light

Christmas is over.  The family are all back to their own homes.  Jake and Bay miss their doggy friends and all the food that is spilled on a holiday.  The house is quiet again.

FIRST FLOOR APARTMENT

I have always been fascinated by the inside of people's houses.  Rooms without people are an invitation to imagine. For that reason I love to walk the streets of Park Slope because there it is possible to see into windows and doorways and imagine what goes on behind the curtains or the bars.  On this sunny day someone has left the light on, or were they reading and left to answer the phone, or is it a welcoming light for a daytime assignation?

DORM FIRE ESCAPE

The warm sun lit stone with the cool greys of the fire escape and the blue shadows of the window frames chant a winter poem to ordinary things.  A small vignette from St. Joe's campus.

PLANT SHADOWS

All winter long the indoor plants help keep my spirit alive as they bravely live on through the dry air and low light.

SHADE SHADOW

SHADE SHADOW

In the winter I follow the sun around my house to see what compositions it will create.  In the afternoon it favors this shade and its pull.  I like the way the whites in this composition make a nice counterpoint to the shadow play.

CACTUS AND LACE

CACTUS AND LACE

Here is the final version of Cactus and Lace.  I was able to get rid of most of the charcoal lines and even things out a bit.  I got this lace while visiting Amsterdam.  I made the curtains and have been enjoying them for at least 20 years.  I think part of that enjoyment is remembering that I had the guts to buy all the lace and the tenacity to make the curtains.  Now I would prefer staying home and taking a walk in the neighborhood, or painting the way the light comes through this Amsterdam lace.

LACE LIGHT

LACE LIGHT

This is the window directly in front of my computer.  The sun creates a different shadow all morning as it moves across the sky.  This is the first really early morning composition when the light is still pink.

Following the Light

I just "stumbled" upon this article about my work.  It is well written and extremely flattering so naturally I love it.  Not sure why the author didn't let me know about it so I could circulate it when it came out but I sure do appreciate the kind words.

EARLY MORNING LIGHT IN DITMAS PARK

Looking out my bedroom window on my Brooklyn holiday I caught this shaft of light that I could not resist.

LIGHT PATTERN

Since I have been painting the light as it appears in dazzling displays around my house, I have become aware of light patterns I never saw before.  Just shows what a  large role our attention plays in what we actually see.
