DANCING SHADOW

DANCING SHADOW
6" x 8"
oil on canvas board

This shadow of a railing seems full of dancing energy as it leaps down the stairs.  Shadows vary in color depending on the light, as you can see here, where the tops of the stairs have a bluish tint.

Every man casts a shadow; not his body only, but his imperfectly mingled spirit. This is his grief. Let him turn which way he will, it falls opposite to the sun; short at noon, long at eve. Did you never see it?

Hi Nana

This is what I mean about your work that can be viewed both as an exploration of light in the real world and as a abstract/minimalist color study.

All painting has been to a more or less extent "designed" by the painter. To the extent that there is something recognizable in the painting it is said to be "realistic". Sometimes the sense of design is weak and what is visible is at least something recognizable. In a totally abstract painting there is also often a weak sense of design and all that is left is the feeling of paint on the canvas.
I like to be able to feel the connection between the shapes on the canvas. That is the fun part for me. I want the feeling of the paint to be subservient (but not absent) to the tension between the shapes. Since I have been creating these small paintings that desire has manifested itself more and more.
Thank you for being a thoughtful observer.
