KATSURAS AFTER THE RAIN IN LATE MARCH

We have two Katsura trees, a male and a female.  In the spring as their leaves gradually unfold they create a pink mist.  This painting was done right after the rain as the trunks were still partially wet.  Here the female seems to be leading a dance to celebrate the new year.

FIRST PORTRAIT

Here is a stab at my first portrait of a live model.  I think it looks pretty much like the guy but it took the whole class for me to get this far.

Across the street from yesterday's post is Albrecht's Flower Market where these colorful pots are waiting for spring customers.

ALBRECHT'S OLD BUILDING

I must look into the history of this building formerly Albrecht's Flower Market.  More later.....Okay it is later.  I stopped by to see what I could find out about this unusual building but so far I have not been able to discover when it was constructed and why it is so unusual.  The property however was used as a camp for Washington's forces in 1777.  If anyone knows more please let me know.

COLOR IN NARBERTH

I frequently pass these colorful houses in Narberth.  They always please my eye as I am doing errands.

PLASTER CAST

In the spirit of "it is never too late to learn something new", I am taking a portrait painting class.  This was our first assignment.  My class is filled with people who really can paint portraits and I have learned several things already.  First since I never painted from a plaster cast before, I learned how enjoyable that can be and half fell in love with this lovely young lad from another world.  Second I learned that even though someone sits as still as possible and is not burdened with color, it is very hard to get a likeness.

CLOUDS AND SNOW

St. Joseph University's new campus.  The snow is finally melting.  For some reason this painting has an eerie feeling for me.

RAIN AT MERION STATION

Was it just last week we still had snow left?  It seems like another world with temperatures in the 70's this week.

FIRST SIGN OF SPRING

Every year I try to capture my joy at seeing these little harbingers of spring pop up through all last years decay, but nothing really does it justice.  I hope to keep trying for many years to come however.

This is the view from the Narberth bridge.  Narberth is the next stop after Merion on the Main Line train (the R5), when you are coming from Philadelphia.

JORDAN HOUSE

This is a wing of Jordan House, an all female residence at St. Joseph's University on Lapsley Lane.  I was drawn to the colors of the building with the blue snow.  It looks like it would be quite snug to be studying in those rooms.

PLOW IN THE STORM

Right after the huge snow storm we had last week, I went out to see what was going on and the only thing in sight was one lone snowplow.  It wasn't plowing, probably going home after a long night.  I love the way it lit up the snow as it came up the street.
